Thursday 16th August 2007 I finally got a chance to visit the Bedouin Tent /settlement somewhere near Mu’tah….such a bless, Alhamdulillah.
Thank you Eiiid (the van driver ), Gmin/penghuni sahara and Zaid for making this visit a marvelous and memorable moment of my life…. Thank you.
Thank you.Thank you Eiiid (the van driver ), Gmin/penghuni sahara and Zaid for making this visit a marvelous and memorable moment of my life…. Thank you.
We saw a few Bedouin tents in the middle of a bare flat land from the main road on the way from Karak to Mu’tah…..Eiid, the driver then turned right heading towards the tents…a few cars and a coaster were also there near the tents..Eiid stopped at one of the tents and was greeted by a young man from the tent. They were having a wedding party and reception ….The young man then invited all of us to join them in the tent….
I was extremely happy knowing that I had a chance to really be sitting in their tent and meeting the real Bedouins.
The men went to the men’s tent and we , 4 of us..( Mimi, Sofie, Azra my DIL and I ) headed towards the ladies’ tent just next to the men’s tent.
The ladies welcomed us warmly… they were so happy to have us as their guests ( uninvited !! ) they let us sit in the corner near the entrance … in no time , we were surrounded by the Bedouin kids ..After having our own space and a few ladies came to say salam to us , we were then served with their traditional delicacy…the Bedouin mansaf… the original taste of mansaf..rice with lamb cooked in goat’s milk /yogurt… I was reminded by Zaid before getting into the tent, if served with mansaf or any kind of food, I have to taste it, no matter what, it’s their norm to serve the guests and as their guests it’s a ‘must’ to taste it to show our respect to them..
All this while, mansaf is the only Jordanian food that I had never ever liked … just couldn’t swallow the gravy and the sour goat’s milk… It’s said that ‘ A person is not a Jordanian until he likes mansaf ’…. (I would rather maintain to be a Malaysian !!)
mansaf for men (above) .. for ladies (below)
They served the mansaf in a big tray and luckily they gave us spoons to scoop the rice and there’s a also a big roti in the middle together with many pieces of lamb. I started to scoop the rice and pick a little bit of the lamb with a bit of the gravy…
Sitting next to me was Azra and while chewing the food, she said to me in a nauseating voice…
” Mama, I feel like vomiting…”…
I said to her ( I was feeling the same… the rice stucked in the middle of my throat )…
“ Just eat it slowly and swallow..please do not vomit…”..
Luckily we didn’t vomit …The lady and the kids were all staring at us….We prayed to God to please don’t let us vomit there….
I only ate 2 small scoops of mansaf and I tried to ‘release’ ourselves from the ‘mansaf ordeal’ by asking the ladies whether I could snap a few pictures…they said YES…. I was almost on my feet to take pictures when the lady ‘asked’ us to eat some more mansaf before taking pictures….( why couldn’t she read my face and mind…eating mansaf is a torture !!! ). I then continued eating only the bread and pretended saying the mansaf is delicious…( a great pretender..hehe )…she told us this is the Bedouin mansaf, different from any mansaf sold out there…ooowww woooww great…but it’s just not our taste…how I wish I could eat the whole tray of it….
We then took a few pics of the bride…a very beautiful Bedouin bride in a wedding dress and uncovered hair..( Sorry, the original face of the bride is only for us to keep, I ' have ' her worn the 'tudung' just for you guys....this Bedouin tribe is all muslims, so I am not going to publish the original uncovered hair of the bride…) The ladies were dancing infront of the bride….. the kids never stopped posing for our camera.
sorry for the not so stylish 'tudung' that I put on her.......
In the mean time, Zaid, Izzat, Gmin and Eiid enjoyed themselves eating mansaf with the goat’s head in the middle of the tray…. These guys are more than Jordanians…they loved this mansaf and even said that this is most ‘kaw’ kaw’ mansaf they have ever tasted…Gmin said he could see the goat’s hair was still on its head… ( kalau dapat kepala kambing macam tu, dah sah kami muntah.. !!!!! )
Then it was time to say goodbye..the ladies even asked us to stay a bit longer , but we told them that we had other places to go…a few villages in Karak and the Dead Sea….
This Bedouin visit will always be my precious wonderful memoir here in Jordan…
As Gmin told me , this visit is his best present to me before I’m flying home..…
What else can I say… YES, YES, THANK YOU , THANK YOU… this is the best present ever….
( my next dream comes true… swimming in the dead sea !!! )

kak elle,
kena tahan betul tekak , sampai petang masih terasa susu kambing terlekat kat tekak.... macam fear factor pulak...
gambar pengantin tu kak elle kena pergi sendiri ke khemah badui... hehehe :)
++++++++++++++
suweileh family,
Tak pe you all lama lagi kat sini, pergi serbu khemah badui kat syarik urdun, banyak masa musim panas... ingatkan akak je yang pura-pura suka mansaf :)
ara and zaid ada kat sini, cuti dah ara tu... gmin masih mengembara di sahara ...penghuni sahara mana boleh duduk je kat bandar metropolitan mu'tah tu...hehehe.
suweileh family,
lupa pulak nak bagitau, pelamin pengantin tu memang macam kat malaysia tapi lagi simple, guna cadar cotton je...
zino,
biasanya arab ni kalau ada yang pedas je, memang diaorang give up nak makan, walaupun pedas sikit je..beriani rasanya diaorang makan nasi nya aje..lauk , sah diaorang tolak...
++++++++++++
princess,
rugi puteri tak dapat pergi, kalau tak mungkin jumpa the bedouin prince...hehe..lekat terus duduk kat khemah ... :P
blackpurple,
menakjubkan sebab khemah tu tak panas...mungkin diperbuat daripada bahan/canvas/kulit yang kalis haba/panas... tak sempat nak analisa bahan khemah tu...
you kena cuba , mungkin boleh makan sebab guys kat sini biasanya boleh makan mansaf dan diaorang kata sedap...entah macamana diaorag punya taste...:P
still got no balls to eat mansaf yuckk! please gimme the rest not that so-called "alahai macam masak lemak aje" dishes.yuucckk! bau muntah!
babazahra',

Membaca cerita Rina pasal mansaf tu...teringin jugak nak tgk camaner le juadah mansaf tu...tapi takut jugak kalau2 kembang tekak ni bila merasa bende yang tak pernah rasa...
Cantik pengantin tu...
Eee... goat's head. I can imagine your reaction.
Frankly I find it funny when I read about you and you kid's reaction. Just like watching a movie where the host serves up something weird adn the gues are obliged to try them.
I am sure it was no laughing matter when you are the guest. Poor you.
But the whole wedding be sure to be an experince that you will never forget.
Pengalaman yg menarik. Jika di Malaysia tak dapat merasainya. He he he...
Your "ordeal" reminds me of one of the Indiana Jones movies when he and his lady partner had to eat food served in that Indian palace and also another place in a tent. It was hilarious to watch. No joke when you are the one made to taste something so "foreign".
Despite all these experiences, it is good for memories.
All the best to you. :)
Lucky you to be able to see all the interesting places ... love the pics!..hmmm the bride is looking on the really young side :) anyways .. I
would love one day to visit Jordan (insyaAllah) .. but from description of the mansaf .. I think I will try to find an excuse not to savour it ;)
Kak Rina,
Camner rasa Mansaf tu ya... Masam-masam susu kambing - mau Cath termuntah on the spot.
Sip baik Kak Rina tak duk lelama kat sana. Nanti the ladies ajak habiskan the whole dulung of mansaf, mau pengsan Kak Rina ya...
LOL!
kak rina... patut kasi gambar setalam kepala kambing tu..!! nak jugak tengok... he he.. ieeyyy, camnor la rasa tu..??
pagi ni tadi saya tanya wife saya awak pernah makan mansaf tak? dia kata pernah gak 2x. pesal plak tiba2 tanya, sbb dia tahu saya x penah makan saya ceritalah yang akak pegi khemah Badoui.dia tanya saya kalau dalam keadaan camtu nak buat apa? kalau saya lah, saya bersumpah aje saya puasa hari tu hehehe cuba akak cakap ikhlas2 betul tak bau dia macam muntah? supaya saya x prejudis sangat.please.
Terima kasih kerana menyiarkan entri sebegini. Makin bertambah ilmu didada. Maaf, bukan abang long saja yang garu kepala, rakan dipejabat pun terperanjat ... "eh ..ada lagi ke orang hidup cara badui ?"
kak lady,
kena lawat kampung badui ..nikamati suasananya.. best..tapi nak tinggal katsitu, tak naklah..lawat okaylah...
aiyah nonya,
Bet you're right..it's a no laughing/smiling matter ... luckily they didn't mind if didn't finish eating, but we must taste it ,a bite is enough..a whole gang of them kept staring at us.so funny indeed !!
+++++++++++++++++++
zalisa maz,
akak cadang balik nak gi melawat rumah orang asli malaysia pulak, tak pernah pergi lagi, pernah masuk museum orang asli kat gombak je...
++++++++++++++++
jt.,
hahahaha... I felt like been trapped by them.... but they were nice to us... just imagine a mat a mat saleh is 'forced' to eat durian or tempoyak.... have your hubby ever tried yet???
ms envy,
Come visit Jordan, you'll love every minute of your stay... 2 years seems flying so fast..sad to say goodbye... it's an experience of a lifetime .
The bride is young since the bedouins usually get married very young , not like other jordanians..
Just try the mansaf..you might like it..hehehe.
+++++++++++++
cat cat,
kalau kena makan habis setalam, akak lari lah jawabnya.... susu kambing yang diproses sendiri, very fresh yang baunya lagi nak terloya :P
+++++++++++++++
mulan,
babazahra',
hehehe..terror lagi your wife ekkkk...tahan dia makan mansaf... akak memang tak boleh kalau kata nak sengaja beli nak makan , memang tak...kalau dihidang terpaksalah jugak, tapi taklebih dari penuh sesudu... baunya taklah sangat macam muntah busuk sangat tapi rasanya memang meloyakan da hamis kambingnya taktau nak describe camne....
excuse puasa tu bagus jugak ekkk, tak terfikir pulak :P
kalau nak kata macam masak lemak, memang tipulah... masak lemak 1000x jauh lebih sedap rasa dan baunya...
abang long,
lain negara lain keistimewaannya.... bab badui pindah randah memang masih jelas kelihatan di sini, in fact di pinggir Amman ni masih banyak khemah badui yang ada penghuninya.. musim sejuk nanti mereka berpindah ke selatan pulak sebab di sana panas sikit... badui ni kaya sebab banyak kambing, tengok mereka deposit duit dalam bank, segumpal sekali bawak, pakai pakaian selamba je macam orang tak berduit...don't know why, but they love cara hidup sebegitu... abag long should come and visit them.
salam makcik,
hehe..trbayang2 kelakar camana di khemah perempuan..keadaan semua dok cover2 nak makan.. kalaulah termuntah kat situ.. aiyaa..hihi
anyway, pengalaman masuk khemah badwi kali ni paling menarik..
hazimin,
memang happening betul.. nak sangat melawat khemah badui, rasakan... tak de peluang nak melawat lagi.... best best ...
waaaaaaaahhhh...bestnye makan mansaf!!!
Jeles kat jimin n zaid...huhu...
wewr,
itu pulak kisahnya.... lain kali kena makan cepat-cepat, scoop nasi and daging biar penuh tangan macam pak arab.... eeeiiii taklah makcik, haritu tengok dia tambah kuah susu penuh satu senduk besar dah rasa macam nak nangis..memang torture... memang takleh nak makan lah mansaf ni, dah try yang kat kedai pun tak terusik dibuatnya, zaid kata sedap, izzat pun dah laju makan mansaf... makcik je yang masih seriau nak makan....
wewr-sama,
cheese biasa tapi kambing tak suka sebab hamis....
laa apa tak cakap nak pergi khmeah badui sekali... tak pe banayk lagi masa, kat syarik urdun jalan nak ke balad sekarang ni banayk khemah badui...
pergilah tawan damascus pulak.. memang banyak tempat sejarah , makcik pun tak habis lagi round walaupun dah 'tawan' Syria february lalu ..:P
samelah kite makcik ina
saye dah 2 tahun try...
masih lagi tekak ni tak dapat terima mansaf....
kompem penin lepas makan mansaf...
yang kalo ade bulu perghhhhhhh!!!!
p/s-fakta mengatakan mansaf dari karak adalah paling sedap...bertuahlah jimin ngn zaid dpt merasa
ustaz munn,
ingatkan boys boleh makan mansaf sebab tengok izzat tu makan sama laju macam zaid dan gmin....
memang mansaf karak yang paling 'kaw' sebab orang karak memang orang asal Jordan ... agaknya lagi ori lagi hamis baunya...
jiran saya orang jordan jugak, tribe bedouin, tapi dia masak mansaf sedappppp....!!! and he said a bedouin must know how to prepare mansaf. the meat was melting in the mouth and the cheese he used bentuk dia macam sebongkah keras. tak de pulak rasa hamis or masam ker....especially to me yang melayu jati ni la...masak lemak cili api bagai.
